Hughston
"Great Chocolate Caper"
May 19, 2000
Principal Luanne Collins
prepared to "take the plunge" into a vat of chocolate pudding at our final assembly on the last day of school.

Local news media representatives and hundreds of students, parents and friends watched as the event unfolded in our gymnasium...

How it all began...
Mrs. Collins promised the Hughston students at an early spring assembly that she would jump into a vat of chocolate pudding, if the students in our school read a cumulative total of 150,000 minutes in four weeks. The challenge was no match for our students; however, who read more than twice that many minutes!

By the way...
Mrs. Collins wears chocolate well!

Our fifth grade PACE students, under the direction of teacher Lisa Wellborn, cooked up this exciting event. They prepared the reading minute logs, advertised the event throughout the school, conducted an art and poetry contest, secured donations, and presented awards to the school's top readers.

Scenes from the day of our assembly...

Hughston teachers got into the act on stage at the "Chocolate Caper" assembly.
Food Service Manager Karla Elliott helped to prepare and test the chocolate pudding.
Students took turns singing their class songs for the audience.
Elsie and baby were on hand to add to the festivities.
Mrs. Collins (second from left) prepares to take the plunge...
But wait! What's pudding without a little whipped cream?

Arm in arm, we say farewell
to another successful year at Hughston Elementary!

Hughston "HUGS" to our assembly sponsors:

  • Radio Disney for serving as event emcee
  • Borden for providing milk and bringing "Elsie" the cow.

Diving Into Pudding
by: Courtney

Radio Disney and Channel 8 News
Now has the spotlight focused on you.
Into the chocolate pudding we want to see you jump
We hope you land softly and not with a thump.
We've all read our minutes and accomplished our goal.
When you're out of the pudding, can we have a bowl?
SPLASH! Goes the pudding all over the gym.
Our favorite principal, hope you can swim.
Now that you've jumped in the chocolate pudding pool,
You've proved to us all that reading is cool!

The Great Chocolate Caper
by: Brittany

There once was a principal
from school,
Who promised to dive into a
chocolate pool.
We just have to read,
So we can succeed.
And don't you think you
school is cool!
