Our Mission
The mission of Hughston Elementary School
is to create
a nurturing environment in which each child is inspired
to achieve personal excellence.
Beliefs
At Hughston, we believe that:
- Each child is unique, valuable and important.
- All children have the innate desire and ability to learn
given appropriately high expectations, quality instruction, time
and resources.
- Caring, nurturing, and success in a safe environment are
essential to the educational process.
- Basic skills and critical thinking are the foundations of
lifelong learning.
- Respect for others and self, as well as the understanding
of cultural and individual differences enhances learning and fosters
harmony within our society.
- Morals and values are necessary components of education
and for the development of responsible citizens.
- Children are responsible for their own actions and have
an obligation to contribute positively to their community.
- Excellence in education is best achieved through a shared
vision, continuous communication and cooperative efforts of students,
their family, staff and the community.
2000-01 Goals
Hughston’s School-Based Improvement Council (SBIC) has been established
to assist the principal in formulating campus performance objectives
and in identifying annual objectives for the improvement of student
outcomes and procedures for implementing those objectives.
The first meeting for the 2000-01 school year was held on September
11. At that meeting, the Hughston mission statement was revised
and beliefs were established.
New goals were adopted as follows:
- Student proficiency will improve annually for all students
in reading according to their academic potential.
- Student proficiency will improve annually for all students
in writing according to their academic potential.
- Student proficiency will improve annually for all students
in math according to their academic potential.
- Students will demonstrate responsible citizenship and good
character.
The SBIC is in the first year of a new five-year cycle. During the next meetings
this school year, the committee will focus on adopting action plans
to help us accomplish our objectives. We will use the Academic Excellence
Indicator System Report which uses TAAS data for all students and
student groups to measure our success in the academic areas. Hughston
has been rated an "Exemplary School" for the past several years by
the Texas Education Agency, and our overall goal is to maintain that
rating, even through rising test standards.
