3rd grade

Welcome to the Hunt Third Grade page. This page is designed with the intent of implementing a high level of communication between parents and teachers. It is our goal to help your child succeed in all that they do. We feel strongly that we must have your involvement to achieve such a goal. This page will be updated periodically with new information regarding such areas as spelling lists, current areas of study, upcoming field trips, etc. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to teach and be a part of your child’s life. We look forward to working with you to make this a fun and successful year!

The instructional areas targeted for third grade include:

  • Listening and Speaking
  • Phonemic Awareness Word Study Spelling
  • Word Reading
  • Fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension
  • Written Expression

Math

The elementary mathematics program in Plano ISD promotes the learning of important and meaningful mathematics through a coherent and comprehensive curriculum.  The program provides opportunities for students to value mathematics, to become confident in their ability to do mathematics, and stresses the importance of experiences that relate mathematics to the real world.  The curriculum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and is designed to build basic understandings in number, operations, and quantitative reasoning; patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking; geometry and spatial reasoning; measurement; and probability and statistics.  Problem solving, language and communication, connections within and outside mathematics and formal and informal reasoning underlie all content areas.  Students use these processes together with technology and other mathematical tools to develop conceptual understanding and to solve problems.  District developed curriculum guides provide a scope and sequence of instruction for each grade level.

Areas of Study:

  • Bar Graphs and Pictographs
  • Money
  • Temperature
  • Telling Time
  • Geometric Shapes
  • Place Value Through Hundred Thousands
  • Estimation
  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Area

Integrated

Integrated curriculum is a strategy for learning in Plano ISD and includes an active, challenging, and student-centered environment. It was written by master teachers and connects the knowledge, skills, strategies, and vocabulary from the disciplines of science, social studies, and health with applications of reading, language arts, and mathematical skills. This model provides rich content, is naturally interconnected in real life, and is based on Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. It offers students numerous opportunities to read, write, solve problems, and to access, synthesize, and use information.

Third grade has six units of instruction that integrate science, social studies, and health in the context of a larger Overarching Concept. These Overarching Concepts are:

  • Diversity
  • Continuity and Change
  • Interactions
  • Systems
  • Communication
  • Balance and Stability
