The mission of the Plano ISD elementary reading and language arts program is… to promote reading, writing, listening, and speaking as the cornerstone for success in school, for professional accomplishment, and for personal fulfillment as a life-long literacy learner. The role of the literacy specialist is to assist with the implementation of the reading/language arts program at the campus level. This includes working in a liaison position with the building principal and district curriculum department to support campus literacy instruction by providing:
* Intervention for struggling readers
* Teacher training in the state mandated accelerated reading program
* Identification/assessment/instruction in the area of Dyslexia
* Assistance in maintaining the campus Literacy Library
* Assistance to classroom teachers in planning and evaluating student
progress in reading and writing
Accelerated Reader (AR®) is a computerized reading management program that helps teachers focus attention on careful reading of books, which improves students’ critical-thinking skills and builds the intrinsic love of reading. It provides the teacher with reliable, objective information.
Used in conjunction with the districts language arts curriculum, AR helps teachers keep each student challenged. Diagnostic reports from AR help ensure every student is challenged without being frustrated.
Additional Information for Parents
Not every book in the school library nor in the classroom libraries has a quiz. Students should choose books that have a high level of interest for them regardless of it having an associated quiz.
