I teach ESL for K-2 and truly love the challenge of teaching each student to speak English. I have been in education for over 20 years and knew when I was a little girl that I wanted to be a teacher. My mother was an educator, and I loved playing school so teaching was the perfect occupation for me. I graduated from the University of Arkansas with a major in Elementary Education and then received my Master's Degree in Elementary Administration. I taught kindergarten for five years before coming to Texas. I settled in teaching first grade at Shepard Elementary and then came to Jackson which has been my home for nine years. My husband, KC, and I have 3 sons. I love being a Jackson Jaguar and know that our school is a SPECIAL place to be!!

My name is Angela Marshall, and I teach third, fourth, and fifth grade ESL. I love teaching and am blessed to work with such a wonderfully diverse group of students. I was raised in this area and attended all 12 grades in Plano. I then attended Baylor University and The University of North Texas and have worked in the field of education for the last 21 years. I have taught at Jackson for five years now and feel fortunate to be part of the Jackson community. My husband, Mike, and I have two children. Emily is 19, and Travis is 15. We live in Murphy with our two dogs, one cat, and three horses!

I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Reading from Abilene Christian University. I taught first grade for several years until I had my first child at which point I became a stay-at-home mom for 19 years. I have three beautiful children, two of whom are in college and one in high school. I was a "room-mom" and worked in the classroom for most of my children's school years. In 2006-2007, I decided to return to teaching. I am
currently job-sharing in an ESL position teaching third, fourth, and fifth graders. I delight in helping students learn. I believe the saying, "They may forget what you said, but they never forget how you made them feel."

In my spare time I enjoy walking, reading, being with my children, and watching soccer games.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is a program designed to help students become proficient in the English language. The program provides intensive instruction in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and spelling. All teaching is in English. The goal of the ESOL program is to teach children English in order for them to become successful in the classroom

The ESOL program at Jackson Elementary serves students in grades K through five. If a language other than English is spoken most of the time by the student or in the home, the child is referred to the ESOL teacher for evaluation. If the child qualifies, the program is then offered to the family. Children in the ESOL program are placed in the regular classroom. They come to ESOL for instruction for 45 minutes each day. Beginners may be seen more often.

Students in the ESOL program are evaluated regularly to measure growth and to determine the appropriate level of instruction When a student demonstrates an adequate command of the English language, he/she will be recommended for dismissal from the program.

Helpful Tips for Learning English
1. Read a story to your child in English each day, and have your child read a story to you
in English each day. Discuss the stories and the pictures together. Have your child
check out books regularly from your local library.

2. Children learn language very quickly from other children. Arrange for your child to
play as often as possible with children who speak English.

3. Enroll your child in activities such as baseball, basketball , soccer , art, and drama
classes.

4. Take your child to weekly story hours held at local libraries and book stores.

5. Check out tape recorded books for your child from the public library. Have your child
listen to the tapes on a tape recorder at home while reading the book.
