News from Ms. McDonald

The music classes at Jackson have been studying instruments this 9 weeks. There is a wonderful website that your child can visit that is sponsored by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. This would be a great reinforcement for what your child is learning in music. It is www.dsokids.com. They will have the opportunity to learn more about instruments, hear their sound and even learn about different composers. I hope you can visit this site with your child.

Program Overview

The students of our school, grades K-5, participate in two music classes per week. In these music classes they are taught using the Kodaly method of music instruction. The goal of this Hungarian based method is to promote music literacy through the use of folk tunes and the child's own singing voice. Our goal is to help students discover that music is a language which they can read, write, and think in just as they do any other language. The process is a developmental and sequential one with new discoveries added in each grade level while all the time reviewing and practicing previously learned concepts and skills.
