Effective
communication involves listening, speaking, reading and writing. As the
speech-language pathologist I evaluate and treat communcation disorder
in these areas. Upon referral to speech therapy, a comprehensive evaluation
is completed in order to determine the student's areas of strengths and
needs in communication. An individualized treatment plan is made for each
student based on the outcome of the evaluation. Therapy strives to maintain
the student's interest while increasing the student's ability to communicate.
GENERAL
HINTS FOR LANGUAGE STIMULATION
1.
Learning language should be fun, never a chore for the child or parent.
2.
TALK to your child. Use simple sentences, not complex sentences.
Whatever you see together, talk about it.
3.
You must be patient with your child. Listen to what he has to say.
Give him/her plenty of time to express himself/herself.
4.
Read to him/her regularly by looking at magazines, books, pictures
and talking about what you see.
5.
Give him/her directions as part of the play acitivity such as
"Put the shoes on the doll's feet" or "Put the ball in the box".
