The No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools program recognizes schools that are meeting the mission to "ensure every child learns, and no child is left behind." Mathews was awarded for being an outstanding school whose students, regardless of background, achieved in the top 10% on state tests.

Our principals, staff, and PTA submitted an extensive documentation about Mathews to the Blue Ribbon Committee. We were honored to be one of only 37 Texas schools who received a 2000 Texas Blue Ribbon School Award.

Mathews Elementary School was notified in January, 2001, by the U.S. Department of Education that it was selected to receive a site visit by a national "blue ribbon schools" panel. The Blue Ribbon site visit was April 9th. and 10th. 2001. Our site visitor, Dr. Keyes Kelly, observed and interacted with our staff, students, and parents. He spent two full days at Mathews. Dr. Kelly submitted a report based on his observations at Mathews.
