Child Development

This class will help develop knowledge and skills in child development. The study of how children develop, and the impact of parenting will be the focus. Some topics that will be covered are: preparation for parenthood, guidance techniques, the cause and prevention of child abuse, guiding children with special needs and child development stages.

  • Relationships (Individual and Family Life)

This course targets individual and family development. Present relationships and the value of a positive self-concept are emphasized. The classroom experience is directed toward helping the students deal effectively with friendships, dating, remaining single, marriage, and parenting. Emphasis is on life skills such as listening, assertiveness, and dealing with stress. The student is encouraged to apply these learned skills to daily living in order to maintain a successful personal and family life. Class discussion is an integral part of the class. The following relationship areas are explored: self, friends, and family. A career connection experience completed outside the classroom is required of all students.

  • Interior Design

This class covers all basic aspects of interior design and decorating. Design topics such as furniture arrangement, floor plans, accessories, window treatments, and furniture styles are covered. Career opportunities in interior design are emphasized.

  • Management/Independent Living

This independent living course explores the following areas: management of everyday living skills, selection of a career, selection of an apartment, home care, clothing selection and care, food and nutrition, and healthy living practices. This course will assist the student in identifying all available resources. Concepts and skills related to career options and in preparation for careers are also addressed. A career connection experience completed outside the classroom is required of all students.

  • Career Studies

This course provides opportunities to explore factors influencing career choices and teaches employability skills that lead to career success. Content will address the diversity of specific career fields and will also focus on interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, negotiation, teamwork, leadership, and community service. Procedures involved in networking, resume writing, interviewing and pre-employment testing will also be addressed. Students will learn to assess potential employers based on opportunities for advancement, training, and benefits that will affect their future lifestyle. This course is recommended for grades 11-12.

  • Sports Nutrition

This course will promote the role that nutrition plays in both professional and recreational sports. Students will investigate the relationship between food and physical, emotional, and mental health. Focus will be placed on individual assessment and each student’s individual needs. Course content will include leader nutrients, body composition, components of fitness, nutritional ergogenics, supplements, nutritional fallacies, and developing a nutritional plan which meets the needs of the individual.

  • Early Childhood Professions

This course is a two-hour block that is for the entire year.
This class provides students the opportunity to work directly with children. Students leave campus and teach in the elementary schools, community preschools, or other childcare businesses. Students work and teach in the on-site preschool.  This is an application program, and students must provide their own transportation to and from the field site.
A criminal history check and a professional appearance are required.
