PLANO EAST SOCIAL STUDIES
ADVANCED PLACEMENT – EARN COLLEGE CREDIT WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL
All Advanced Placement classes require at least one hour of homework each night. Students need to have good reading skills and a high level of intrinsic motivation.
We highly recommend that the student be enrolled in Honors English at the high school level.
CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS IN ADVANCED PLACEMENT
SOCIAL STUDIES
The student needs to:
1. Understand that the course work is Freshman and Sophomore college curriculum. It will be more difficult than honor classes.
2. Evaluate the time constraints from work and extracurricular activities.
3. Plan to schedule at least 45 minutes each night for reading and studying. (In some classes such as Economics, the students will need to read the textbook assignments 3 or 4 times)
4. Enroll in honors English and Social Studies classes during the 9th and 10th grade. Maintain at least an 80 average.
A.P. ECONOMICS *one semester course which goes beyond the high school curriculum and provides skills and knowledge to earn college credit. SENIORS ONLY
A.P. GOVERNMENT *one semester course which goes beyond the high school curriculum and provides skills and knowledge to earn college credit. A.P. US History is a good foundation for this SENIOR course.
A.P. EUROPEAN HISTORY *year course that explores European History since 1500 – great elective for history lovers. JUNIORS AND SENIORS
A.P. UNITED STATES HISTORY
*year course which goes beyond the high school curriculum and provides skills and knowledge to earn college credit. Explores US history from colonial period to the present. JUNIORS AND SENIORS
A.P. PSYCHOLOGY
*one semester elective – interesting and insightful lesson and discussion. JUNIORS AND SENIORS
A.P. HUMAN
GEOGRAPHY
*one semester elective – systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of the Earth’s surface.
ELECTIVES
PSYCHOLOGY
*one semester course that examines the individual and his thinking, motivations,
and perspectives.
SOCIOLOGY
*one semester course that examines society, its impact on the individual, varied
cultures, and institutions.
HONORS
SOCIOLOGY
*one semester course that will research and analyze primary sources and scholarly
works. Course will include an honors level project.
