AP/IB UNITED STATES HISTORY GUIDELINES

  1. An AP course in U.S. history provides you with a learning experience equivalent to that obtained in most college introductory U.S. history courses.  It is designed to help you acquire the analytical skills and factual knowledge you need to deal critically with a wide variety of historical problems.  You will also learn to assess historical materials – their relevance to a given issue, their reliability and their importance – and to weigh the evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship.  The course will help you develop the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions on the basis of informed judgment and to present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in your essays.

  1. Criteria for success:

The student needs:

  1. to understand that the course work is freshman and sophomore college curriculum.  It will be more difficult than honor classes.
  2. to evaluate the time constraints from work and extracurricular

activities.

  1. to plan to schedule AT LEAST ONE HOUR each night for reading and studying.  The student should have very good reading comprehension skills.  The student will read 60 to 90 pages for each unit of study.   The students are expected to use the reading as the basis of their learning.  The teacher reinforces with additional handouts, some notes, and class discussion.
  2. experience in honors level English and social studies classes during

the 9th and 10th grade.
