Pace of Class Outside Work Literature
Writing Skills Prerequisite Grades
Expectations    

.: Pace of Class

  • College freshman level. Fast pace.
  • Long range assignments encourage self-pacing and self-planning.
  • Books are read independently with only introduction and minimal guidance.

.: Outside Work

  • One hour homework per night minimum.

.: Literature

  • Survey of American Literature
  • Summer reading
  • One novel per 6-weeks
  • College-level anthology as textbook
  • AP skills used for analysis
  • Use of literary criticism

.: Writing Skills

  • Must enter class writing clear, organized prose
  • Most writing is done in class on a timed basis.
  • Emphasis on the analysis of rhetoric and persuasion
  • Emphasis on development of an argument and writing persuasively
  • One major research project

.: Recommended Background

  • English 2 – pre-AP with a minimum grade of 85
  • PSAT: 60 or higher
  • Ability to read challenging material independently with good comprehension

.: Grades

  • Comprehensive 6-week test each grading period
  • Fewer grades taken which weighs each more heavily
  • 10-15% of grade is based on class participation.

.: Overall Expectations

  • Preparation & success on the Language & Composition AP Test in May
