| DESCRIPTION: |
In an increasingly technological world, the ability to employ quantitative
methods and data analysis has become a vital skill. From medicine to business
and industry, a wide variety of professional field require a working knowledge
of statistics. The purpose of the AP course in statistics is to introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing and drawing conclusions about data. The course is built around four main topics: exploring data, planning a study, understanding probability theory and acquiring critical inferential reasoning skills. Since the emphasis in the course is on conceptually understanding fundamental ideas, the memorizing of formulas is not a desired outcome. Consequently, students taking the AP exam will be given an extensive list of formulas and tables. AP Statistics is project oriented and calculator/computer based. Students who successfully complete the course and examination may receive credit and/or advanced placement for a one-semester introductory college statistics course. |
| HOMEWORK: | Assigned on a daily basis. |
| TESTS: | 2-3 unit exams per 6-week period. |
| PROJECTS: | Many short-term (1 week or less in length) and one long term (3-4 weeks in length) |
| OUTSIDE COSTS: | Graphing calculator required (TI83 recommended due to statistics capabilities) |
| WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE: | Most majors now require at least one college course in statistics - particularly majors in business/economics, social/political sciences, medicine, agriculture, psychology, education and criminal justice. The course is recommended for students who may have completed Pre-Calculus as a junior and have decided not to take Calculus as a senior or for those looking for another math course. |
