Our Mission — This required course in government will include the basic structure and function of the American Federal Republic, a citizen’s role within the democratic political process, and the study of our federal and state constitutions. The course is divided into approximately six units with the majority of the focus on our national government. A structure, duties, and powers of government at the state and local levels will be taught with the three branches of national government with the emphasis on being able to compare and contrast the different levels of government.

Our Teachers — The Government Team is dedicated to the belief that students will learn and succeed in a classroom where they are actively involved and not simply passive recipients of information. We strive to create a classroom atmosphere that encourages students to want to know more about our government. Through the use of primary source material, current events, simulations, and role-playing we allow our students to experience the law and government by actively involving them in situations that require them to think and apply the information we have studied.

How to be successful in this course - This course has been designed to challenge students while providing opportunities for them to be successful. A calendar and objective sheet will be available at the beginning of each unit. It will list the assignments and objectives for each unit. All assignments are expected to be turned in on the assigned day. Homework assignments are given in advance so students may plan their schedule accordingly. Reading quizzes and vocabulary quizzes are designed to test the students knowledge of key concepts that they are expected to learn on their own. Notes will be allowed on these quizzes if they are complete and in their spiral. An optional six weeks test will be offered at the end of each six weeks. This comprehensive, multiple choice exam will cover all units for a given six weeks. The grade on this test will replace the lowest test grade for that six weeks. It will NOT be allowed to replace a zero, project, or an open note test. Students should use the unit objectives to prepare for this exam.
