Mary Alice Skaggs Elementary is the proud recipient of several prestigious awards since its opening in 1996. Every year Skaggs has been open (eleven years) it has received the state rating of EXEMPLARY. To achieve this rating a school must score 90% or better in all subjects tested on the TAKS including Special Education student tests. Skaggs has received twice, in 2006 and 2007, the highest award the state gives call the Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) Honor Roll School Award. This award is also based on consistently high TAKS Commended scores. Only eight schools in PISD received this award. In 2006 Skaggs received the highest award in the nation when it became a NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL. This is our proudest achievement as this award is the highest award a school can achieve! In the November, 2007 issue of TEXAS MONTHLY Skaggs was recognized as being in the top 34 schools in the state to be "Higher performing in all areas". The areas included reading, writing, math, and science. Skaggs was the only school in PIDS to be on this list of state "higher performing schools". Schools across the state were rated because they consistently scored high in all areas measured and when compared to similar schools across the state. At Skaggs we embody our Mission Statement where we inspire a joy of learning, celebrate all and encourage everyone to "Reach for the Stars!"
