The role of the literacy specialist is to be a language arts curriculum resource person who disseminates foundational best practices for teachers, provides in classroom coaching to support teacher development of skillful practice, monitors student growth, conducts individual informal testing and small group instruction/conferences, and maintains benchmark student data.

We are very fortunate at Skaggs Elementary to have a literacy library. This was made possible by monetary contributions from the Skaggs PTA and our building funds. A literacy library is designed to provide teachers with a variety of "leveled" books in order to differentiate student reading to meet the various needs within the classroom.

Guided reading is an important component of our reading program. During guided reading, teachers provide books at the child’s instructional level. It is quite common to have children reading on grade level as well as above and below the expected grade level. The literacy library allows the teacher to provide appropriate reading material that addresses current reading levels so that maximum growth can be made.
