SBIC

Stinson Elementary
School-Based Improvement Committee (SBIC)

The SBIC serves in an advisory role to assist the principal in developing and monitoring the campus 3-5 year plan.  It also approves staff development and waiver requests.  The SBIC is a required entity and its duties mandated by statute.  The committee reviews student performance with an emphasis on academics and the Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS).  Each January schools receive a Campus Report based on AEIS (TAKS results and attendance).

Membership is voluntary.  Staff members are elected by peers.  Parent and community members are randomly selected and/or appointed.  The committee meets 3-4 times a year.

Barbara Salamone

Mrs. Salamone welcomed the community members and faculty to the second SBIC meeting of the school year.  Members introduced themselves once again.

Barbara Salamone

Highly Qualified Teacher

Continuous Improvement Plan 2007-2008

Maureen Yervasi

Mrs. Yervasi explained that as a result of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, all teachers must be highly qualified.  To be highly qualified a teacher must have at least a Bachelor’s degree, have full state certification, and demonstrate competency in core academic subject areas assigned.  The goal of PISD is to meet this requirement by the end of this school year.  In order to ensure that PISD continues to hire only highly qualified teachers, a plan was developed that would assist district and school administrators in meeting this goal.  The entire plan was reviewed with the members of the committee.  Several questions were addressed by Mrs. Salamone and Mrs. Yervasi.

Reflections on the Campus Improvement Plan

Maureen Yervasi

Mrs. Yervasi reviewed the goals established at the last SBIC meeting.  In the area of reading and language arts, the teachers continue to use Star Strategies, Bloom’s Taxonomy, and the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing.  Mrs. Thompson, Literacy Specialist, has scheduled meetings with the Kindergarten staff to address information and strategies in Small Group Reading Instruction.  Mrs. Thompson, as well as the 4th grade team leader Lori Sloan, presents the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing and Empowering Writers at various staff meetings and Early Release days.

Progress in social studies, science and math were also reviewed.  Mrs. Yervasi shared with the committee several exciting evening events at Stinson, beginning with Math Night, November 13, 2007.  Curriculum coordinators explained for the attendees the philosophy and objectives of our math teaching.  Parents were actually able to work on math activities to learn more about how students are expected to perform in class.

Science Night, December 13, 2007, was presented by Ginger Britain, Science Coordinator, and Phyllis Stoup, Social Studies Coordinator.  They explained the Integrated Curriculum (Science, Social Studies, and Health) developed by PISD.  They also talked about the importance of technology for the success of the Integrated Curriculum.  Mrs. Yervasi shared that 46 students participated in the Science Fair this year.

Multicultural Night, November 16, 2007, was a huge success once again.  It was attended by two to three hundred people.  Children performed in cultural costumes.  There were educational booths of several different nations, as well as food tasting.

Sharing of Mid Year Assessment Data

Looking at Progress

Barbara Salamone

Mrs. Salamone explained the MAP (Measures of Academic Performance) tests administered to the students this year.  The results of the tests help teachers meet the individual needs of the students.  She reviewed a chart that showed the progress seen from the September administration to the January administration of the test.

Update on Bond Program

Barbara Salamone

Mrs. Salamone provided the participants with information about the upcoming Bond Program.  Various links about the proposal were noted that would help the community make educated decisions when they vote.

Closing Discussion

Barbara Salamone

The final SBIC meeting will be attached to the evening choir concert on May 22, 2008.  She expressed her appreciation to the members for attending.
