Plano ISD follows
the recommendations of the Texas Education Agency in focusing
on the developmental needs of the students in the guidance
curriculum. It is a proactive and preventative program.
The program guides students through age appropriate needs
such as study skills, social skills, decision making , and
problem solving. The counselor is first of all an academic
counselor to follow through on the academic needs of students;
secondly to assist student in an adjustment to crisis in
their lives; to assist staff member and parents as a resource
in areas needed for the students.
Classroom guidance is taught to each class once every two
weeks. Lessons are usually one half hour in length, some
longer if the need arises. Special events such as Red Ribbon
Week emphasizing anti drug messages and Friendship Week
emphasizing getting along with others are the special weeks
scheduled for the year.
