| Throughout the year you may hear
students and teachers talk about the Accelerated Reader or AR program.
Students in grades K-5 have the opportunity to read books on their
level and then take a test to determine their comprehension of the
story. Students may read “red dot” books independently, with
a buddy or parent, or have the book read to him/her. Not all
books in the library have an Accelerated Reader test, so we put
red dots on the spines to let the students know which books have
a test. On the inside of the book we include the Reading Level
(RL) and the number of points (PT) the students can earn when taking
a test. The tests are taken on classroom computers and usually
consist of 5-10 questions. Students earn points based on the
number of questions they answer correctly. The points are
used in several ways. Students can use the points to purchase
items at the Accelerated Reader store every 9 weeks. Also,
each classroom is part of a building-wide team that competes for
different rewards each nine weeks. A copy of the Accelerated
Reader test list is available at Schimelpfenig Public Library, Thomas
Elementary Library, and right below on our website. |
