I read this book and couldn’t stop!  It’s about Elizabeth I and how her teenage years were survived.  Her father, King Henry VIII, exiles her here and there.  I liked this book because I learned a lot about her life, and how it was back then.  Anyone who enjoys The Royal Diaries series will love this book.

Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie by Kristiana Gregory

I liked this book because it is a historical fiction book.  I also liked it because it helped me get a feel for some of the journal entries in integrated, because it was in journal form.  I think this book is great for girls and boys.  If you are a boy and are afraid to read it because you’ll look girly, you can always check out the “My Name is America” books.  They are made by the same people that make “Dear America” except they are a boy’s journal.  In this book a girl is on the Oregon Trail.  She has to go through many hardships such as death.  Also, she has to deal with the fact of growing up.  She is 12 years old and her friend Pepper is 14 and is getting married.  I hope you read it!

The Lost Years of Merlin by T.A. Barron
Fantasy

If you like Harry Potter, then this book is right for you.  It has adventure, little mysteries, magic, and the legendary wizard, Merlin.  This book is about a young Merlin who is just discovering his powers.  He lives with a woman who claims to be his mother, but he does not believe she is because she is too secretive.  One day the town bully tried to burn Merlin’s mother, but Merlin used his powers to burn that boy.  Realizing what he had done, he ran into the fire to try to rescue the bully, but instead, he blinded his eyes.  He was then cast into a world of darkness.  His mother prayed to God asking him to give Merlin his sight back if he did not use his powers again.  Then one day, they discovered that Merlin had a second sight which allowed him to see but not as well as with regular eyes.  When Merlin got more confidence, he bade good-bye to the woman who claimed to be his mother and went out to the sea to look for his true identity.  He landed on the magical place of Fincayra where his read adventures began.
I liked this book because of all the magic and because of its beautiful writing.  My whole soul was into it.  It seemed as if I was there seeing all what was happening to Merlin.  Just like for the Harry Potter books, I could not put it down.  In my opinion, this book is much more exciting than Harry Potter.  This is truly my favorite book.  T.A. Barron is an excellent writer.

Marie Antoinette by Kathryn Laskey
Historical Fiction

This book is about a 13-year-old princess.  She will be the Queen of France.  She is writing in her diary and it will tell you about the life of a princess, a dauphine, and a little about being a queen.  Even though she is a princess, she doesn’t have a perfect life.  It will tell you about how she had to get ready and what she had to go through.  I liked it because it told about someone’s life long before we were born.  I think someone else would like it because if you like historical fiction, then you would like this book.

Morning Girl by Michael Dorris
Historical Fiction

This book is set on a Bahamian island in 1492.  Morning Girl and her brother Star Boy have a complicated, yet simple life on the island.  This is a short book, but it is a good one.  There is a journal entry from Christopher Columbus at the end.  It is about Morning Girl and her people.

I liked this historical fiction book because the way Morning Girl and Star Boy are portrayed is very good and it makes me feel as if I was there.

I think that if you are a historical fiction fan, this book is for you.  It can be funny and sad, both at the same time.  If you like historical fiction this is definitely for you.

This book really proves that you can be friends forever.  Elizabeth and Tara*Starr are best friends.  Then, Tara*Starr moves away.  To continue their friendship, they write letters to each other.  Tara*Starr’s family gets better, but Elizabeth’s falls apart.  I enjoyed reading how this friendship changed.  Letter fights and exciting events kept me reading.  I recommend this book for girls because of girly girl talk.  I think any girl who knows a thing or two about friendship will love this book.

The Universe and How It Works edited by Robin Kerrod
Non-fiction

This is an all-purpose science book.  It is OK for all ages and tells about interesting things.  Chapter One, section orange, tells you about basic science and matter.  Purple section, chapter two, tells mainly about measurements and ideas of ancient scientists.  There’s chapter three, a hodge-podge, and chapter four is about space.

I liked this book because it told me about things that I never knew.  I was interested in this book because it also told me about things I wondered about.  I liked that.  If you are curious about anything in science, this is a book for you.

Although this isn’t an AR book, I suggest you read it carefully because you can’t enjoy it unless you read carefully.  If you like science, this is definitely a book for you.

Realistic Fiction

Snail Mail No More is the sequel to P.S. Longer Letter Later.  Elizabeth and Tara*Starr continue their lives in new places with new people.  Tara*’s family is preparing for a new member while Elizabeth’s family has to deal with the changes.  I loved this book because the authors really express feelings from a teenage girl.  A girl would like this if they know a lot about life.  One more thing, you MUST read P.S. Longer Letter Later first.

Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger by Louis Sachar
Fiction

A school was closed for repairs.  All the kids were sent to horrible schools until the school was repaired.  When the school is opened again, unbelievable things happen to the kids of Wayside School like substitutes and Lewis the yard teacher!  Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger is a great book with tons of hilarious things that would never happen in real life.  I give this book a 5 star rating because I had to read on and on and on and on just like the Energizer Bunny.  If you like weird teachers, weird kids and especially weird schools, Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger is perfect for you.

In the story, Winnie (the main person in the story) decides to run away.  Winnie meets a 17-year-old boy named Jesse that will stay 17 forever because he drank magic water out of a magic lake.  Winnie gets kidnapped and taken to his home.
