World Geography Studies:

Course#: 25300A       Prerequisite: None       Grades 9-12 
This course introduces students to the physical and human world around them and helps them develop the means to examine that world. Facts and information on physical, cultural, political, and economic geography as well as abundant opportunity to refine the content through the exercise of map and globe skills, and thinking skills will be provided to the student.

World Geography Studies-Honors:

Course#: 25303A       Prerequisite: Teacher approval and appropriate test scores       Grades 9-12 
Honors world geography is designed for mastery of state essential elements and sub-elements as well as extension beyond this mastery. In this course, critical thinking and analytical skills will be utilized in various projects including interpretation of primary and secondary source materials. Students will use their knowledge of spatial relationships, systematic physical and human processes and the interaction between people and their environment to make the intelligent decisions as citizens. 


Human Geography-AP:

Course#: 25325B      Prerequisite: Teacher approval and appropriate test scores Grades 9-12
This class introduces students to the systematic study of patterns, and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alternation of the earth’s surface. Students will also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their science and practice. This course prepares the student to take the Advanced Placement exam and satisfies the World Geography credit for graduation.

World History Studies

Course#: 25200A       Prerequisite: None        Grades 9-12 
This course includes a survey of ancient, medieval, and modern times with an emphasis placed upon modern times. A background of world events will be presented to the student to help understand current events and world problems. Both Western and Nonwestern areas of the world will be studied.

World History Studies-Honors
Course#: 25203A        Prerequisite: Teacher approval and appropriate test scores       Grades 9-12

The honors student will be expected to use primary source materials extensively. Additionally, emphasis will be given to the study of prehistoric times and the modern era. Research, critical thinking, and writing skills will be developed through creative projects and activities.
 
World History-AP

Course#: TBA       Prerequisite: None        Grades 10-12 
This course may be taken to fulfill the world history requirement for graduation. This course focuses primarily on the past thousand years of the global experience. It emphasizes the empires of China and Mesoamericia; the explanation of Islam; the period of new political units in Africa and Europe; and social, cultural, and economic developments around the world. This course prepares the student to take the Advanced Placement exam

Humanities

Humanities
Recommended Grade Placement: 9-10 Credit: 1 Year*
Recommended Prerequisite: Gifted and Talented Identification

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Humanities is an elective class designed to meet the needs of the gifted and talented student. The course runs on a two-year cycle with the first year covering the Greco-Roman period through the Renaissance and the second year covering the Enlightenment through the Twentieth Century. (It does not matter when a student begins the cycle.) The material presented in the course covers all aspects of the Humanities with a special emphasis on the art, architecture, philosophy and drama of the time periods. Students will use a college-level textbook which is Euro-centric in its approach. Students will learn to write analytical essays, present oral and PowerPoint presentations and analyze art, philosophy and drama. Activities are varied so that each student's "giftedness" may be expressed. Leadership and community service activities are also incorporated into the course.

CONCURRENTLY with the Humanities course, students will be enrolled in Honors World History. The material of this course is divided between the two years so it matches the scope and sequence of Humanities. At the end of the first year, students will earn one semester credit in Honors World History and then will earn the second semester credit the second year.
