Alissa Claassen and the Deaf Education group were awarded a
$1000.00 Plano ISD Education Foundation 2004 Educator Incentive
Grant. Mrs. Claassen collaborated with the Deaf Ed. groups from
Haggard Middle School and Plano Senior High School in creating
the Literacy Alive! program. The project will teach students
to look past their own disabilities as an obstacle to success
and use hard work and education to reach their full potential.
The secondary students of the Plano Regional Day School Program
for the Deaf will invite guest speakers with disabilities to
speak at a series of formal dinners. The events will emphasize
achievement in spite of disability and the role of literacy
in success.
*Vines
World History was number one in the entire district final exam
results for the fall of 2003. Vines had the highest scores and
highest % of mastery, and Vines world geogrpahy ranked number
two in the district for scores and mastry.
*For
twenty years, the Vines High School National Honor Society has
received the Meadows Foundation Award for Community Service.
*Over the past ten years, over 200 students who attended Vines
have been named National Merit Semifinalists and Finalists.
*Vines received the Caudill Award for Architecture Excellence
in school design.
*Vines received Exemplary Recognition from the Texas Education
Agency based on 2002-2003 TAAS scores.
*Vines, in partnership with UTD, implements yearly the tutor/mentor
program.
*Vines offers strong programs in the music area (band, choir,
and orchestra) with various programs placing 1st and receiving
Sweepstakes Awards annually.
*Vines uses an innovated approach to learning styles in order
to meet the needs of all student populations, including a designated
Vines Academy for the academically at-risk student.
*Vines has a strong mentoring program, using various community
members to work hand in hand with designated students.
*Vines uses technology to participate and offer higher level
courses in low enrollment classes via the Distance Learning
Program.
*Vines offers strong programs in the fine arts area (speech,
drama) with teams competing, performing, and placing/winning
at local, state, and national competitions yearly.
*Vines science fair and history fair students routinely compete
and place/win at the district, regional, state, national, and
international levels.
*Vines offers AP/pre-AP courses in English, social studies,
and art.
*Vines art students (all levels) compete in a variety of contests
and exhibits annually, placing and winning a variety of titles.
The City of Plano in a city art exhibit displays painted “Art
Furniture of the Masters” annually from Vines.
*Vines was named by Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC)
Just For The Kids (JFTK) National Honor Roll as one of the top
10 high schools in Texas. Texas Monthly recognized Vines for
this accomplishment as well.
