Prerequisite: None

This class is the introduction to theatre arts.  Students will read plays; perform improvisations, duets and monologues; and study theatre history.  This is a full-year course and provides one Fine Arts credit.  Skill focus is on the following:

  • Improvisation
  • Characterization
  • Audition technique
  • Stage movement
  • Voice and diction

Theatre 2
10 - 12

Prerequisite: Theatre 1

Theatre II is a class for the motivated student seeking an advanced course designed to equip one with the tools needed to take theatre to the next level.  In this course, students will read plays, perform improvisation, be required to see plays outside the school, complete project portfolios, and perform.  This is a full-year course and provides one Fine Arts credit/elective credit.  Students interested in preparing to pursue Theatre Major Studies at PESH are encouraged to take Theatre II.  Skill focus is on the following:

  • Play production
  • Theatre history
  • Acting theory/philosophy
  • Duet acting
  • Audition skills
  • Literary analysis
  • Technical theatre and design
  • Career opportunities
  • Acting musical theatre
  • Audience etiquette

Technical Theatre 1
9 - 12

Prerequisite: An application may be required

Technical Theatre is a class for the creative, motivated student seeking knowledge of stagecraft, lighting, sound, costumes, makeup, and all that goes along with producing a show.  Skill focus is on the following:
  • Safety
  • Literary analysis
  • Set design and construction
  • Sound design
  • Light design
  • Prop design and construction
  • Costume design and construction
  • Makeup design and application
  • House Management
  • Publicity
Students will be using power tools, sewing machines, and computers in this hands-on class.  Grades are given daily and follow PISD grading guidelines.  This is a full-year course that counts as one Fine Arts/elective credit.

Technical Theatre 2
10 - 12

Prerequisite: Technical Theater I (1 credit) and teacher or counselor approval and an application may be required

This course is an advanced exploration of all areas of technical theater. Topics will include set design, set construction, lighting, sound, properties, costuming, and special effects. Students will study stage management, exploring various forms of leadership skills. Students will be required to attend play rehearsals and serve on production crews outside of class. Students will be required to read plays and/or see local productions.

 


Rising Stars

Prerequisite - Previous middle school/high school or community acting experience AND teacher recommendation

This class is for the student interested in perusing acting.  This student has acquired basic theatrical knowledge such as stage direction and rehearsal conduct and has an artistic discipline.  Students in Advanced Theatre I & II should also have time to participate as fully as possible in the WHS Theatre Productions throughout the year.  Students interested in preparing to pursue Theatre Major Studies at PESH, acting in the community or regional theatre, or pursuing a degree in acting are encouraged to take Advanced Theatre I & II.  Students from these classes will form the core of all WHS Theatre productions and are selected on a teacher recommendation and/or audition.

Prerequisite - Previous middle school/high school or community acting experience AND teacher recommendation

Advanced Technical Theatre I & II is for the student seriously interested in building, creating, and planning all of the “behind the scenes” preparations that must be in place before the performance can begin.  This student will have a basic knowledge of theatre safety and has a desire to work cooperatively as part of a team.  Students from these classes will form the technical crew for WHS Theatre productions and are selected based upon teacher recommendation.
