| Algebra
1: This is the first-year algebra course in which students
will expand their math concepts from calculating with only
real numbers to calculations involving variables and unknown
quantities. Problem solving and equation solving skills are
developed and expanded throughout the course. Graphing concepts
will be expanded from their basic coordinate points to linear
and quadratic functions. Throughout the course, we use real-world
application problems to help show the relevance of math concepts
to actual situations.
Honors
Algebra I (Pre-IB, G & T): See "Algebra I"
for course information. In addition, as with all honors courses,
Honors Algebra I is designed for the exceptional math student,
one who has exhibited not only high math achievement and ability
as shown by standardized tests, but also high math grades
from the previous year. The regular algebra curriculum will
be enriched with advanced problem solving techniques and will
therefore, require additional out-of-class homework and study
time.
Geometry:
Geometry is a college preparatory class which reflects a way
of thinking and of seeing the world. Geometry includes the
properties of shapes such as circles, triangles, hexagons,
and many more. Geometry observes patterns in nature and incorporates
them into various activities. Geometry will use models and
represent many mathematical and real world situations that
will allow students to perceive the connection between geometry
and the real and mathematical world. Students will be expected
to learn geometry ideas, relationships and properties and
use them to solve problems. Algebra I skills such as graphing
lines, solving equations, and evaluating formulas will be
incorporated in solving geometry problems.
Honors
Geometry (Pre-IB or G & T): See "Geometry"
for course description. Honors Geometry requires a higher
level of thinking, and it extends concepts that are presented
in regular geometry; therefore, additional out-of-class time
may be required for both homework and study. Students will
follow the same general course outline as students in regular
geometry, but daily assignments, quizzes, tests and projects
are modified to increase the level of difficulty to an appropriate
level for honors students.
Algebra
II: Students will study linear systems, relations and
functions, complex number systems, polynomials, rational expressions,
matrices, determinants, conic sections, logarithms, sequences,
and series.
Honors
Algebra II (Pre-IB, G & T): Students study same topics
as Algebra II, plus additional topic in statistics and high
dimensional mathematics as time permits. High levels of understanding
such as relationship of ideas, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation
will be stressed. Expectations are high for student enthusiasm
and excellent work ethic, as for any honors level course.
Honors
Pre-Calculus: This course is for very advanced math students
who have completed Algebra I, Geometry, and perhaps Algebra
II in middle school. This course is currently being taught
via long distance learning to high school students across
the district from a classroom at Vines HS. The Honors Pre-Calculus
course follows the Honors Pre-Calculus curriculum taught at
the Senior High Schools.

Math Tutorials / Make-up Testing at Williams High School
The math department prepares a tutorial schedule designed to offer a variety of days and times for tutorial opportunities. These department tutorials allow us to offer a set tutorial schedule using a single classroom for each subject. The teachers on each subject team sign up for a day and time, so a student may or may not find his own teacher in a tutorial session. If a student needs tutorials with his/her own teacher, please contact that instructor for available times.
We are offering two different types of tutorials:
Homework Help tutorials are for students who just need assistance with their homework. A math teacher will simply be available to answer questions on an individual or small group basis. Students may be grouped together for peer tutoring with teacher assistance as time permits.
Week-in-Review tutorials are for students who have been absent or need re-teaching. A teacher will present a summary lesson of all material taught during the week and answer questions about math concepts – not just specific homework problems.
The tutorial schedule may occasionally change due to assigned duties, meetings, or unexpected conferences. Every effort will be made to find a substitute unless the attendance of the entire staff is required. Teachers will notify students of cancellation of tutorials when the conflict is know well in advance.
Students are asked to sign in with the teacher in charge of tutorials. This will provide a record of attendance for parents, teachers, and administrators.
The department also has a list of individuals who are available for private tutoring outside the regular school day. If you are interested in paying for private tutorials, please contact Tracie Langford at 469-752-8300 ext 38366 or tracie.langford@pisd.edu for more information.
Make-up testing is also offered on a department basis. Each week, teachers prepare make-up folders containing quizzes and tests for students who are missing these grades. Make-up testing is offered on Tuesdays before and after school in room N107. Students are encouraged to make up quizzes/tests on the next available make-up Tuesday if at all possible. If a student needs to make-up a quiz/test on a day other than Tuesday, please contact his/her instructor for available times.
